What active hell is going on over there?

Grace, the silver-haired girl hyperventilates while her hands shake, gripping her phone.

Coach Tess runs over and helps her to the bleachers so they can have a moment to discuss what happened. I can’t hear them, but it doesn’t take an expert to see she must have gotten unfortunate news.

A minute later, Grace is dismissed from class, leaving the competing team down a player.

Coach Tess chooses not to blow on that irritating whistle for our attention. Our ears have had enough stimulation for the minute. “For the remainder of the period, just play your best, girls.”

“What happened?” The ruby-haired girl asks on Abbie’s team.

Coach Tess bites the corner of her cheek at the question. “It’s not my place to say. Let’s hurry this up. You only have twenty more minutes to earn your extra credit.” She brings back the reminder as if it mattered more.

My eyes narrow at Abbie. Princess’s pouty power stance keeps my attention longer than appropriate, filling my chest with heat.

She still smells like citrus fruit. Her tight red tank top and black shorts highlight those impossible curves I can’t keep my eyes off of. Despite better judgment, my mind roams down a dangerous alley.

What I wouldn’t give to press that body against a wall, trail my hands up her shirt, massage her breasts, and have her gasp in my ear from the invasion.

“‘Sup, Xal-ton!” Gus breaks my eye contact by stepping in front of me. “Sorry about what happened the other day…” The rest of his words mute in my ear as if to protect myself from his stupidity.

It’s not until Abbie’s name leaves his mouth that my attention returns. My gaze sharpens on him, bringing me back to reality.

“Repeat that?” I order in a callus tone, as I cross my arms over my core.

Gus takes a tentative step back, noting my sudden hostility. “Abbie agreed to help me study for our blockchain test tomorrow,” he supplies. “I wanted to know if that was cool with you since you two seem… like an item.” He hesitates on the right phrase to call us.

There’s no other way to explain how hard I want to drive my fist through his pathetic face. I can practically hear it; his cries at the impact shattering against his nose, breaking cartilage as he goes down.

I take a deep breath through clenched teeth, but it doesn’t cool the ragged mood I contracted from his words. The thought of him alone with my Abbie—no. She’s not “my” Abbie. Fuck. I can’t even place when I started referring her to that.

As much as I hate giving in to the tight coil of envy that’s gripping, the idea of her knowing how much it bothers me rivals the ache.

“We’re not together,” I manage tightly.

“Oh, terrific!” Gus’s expression beams like a child given full access to a candy warehouse.

Every muscle in my body squeezes to restrain myself from not going berserk but I can’t turn it off. Great.

I squint my eyes back at Gus high-fiving one of our teammates and I slip my hands through my hair.
